Beowulf is my name
27 Jan 2026 11:51In the last class, Beowulf's name* finally shows up! He's been spoken of in the poem earlier, but not by name until now. Below lines 340-343.
Him þa ellenrof andswarode, | Then the valiant one answered,

wlanc Wedera leod, word æfter spræc, | proud leader of the Geats, and spoke words after, |
heard under helme: “We synt Higelaċes | tough-looking under his helmet: “We are Higelac’s |
beodġeneatas; Beowulf is min nama. | table companions; Beowulf is my name. |

*Note: the name Beowulf DOES actually show up pretty early in the poem, but it's referring to someone else -- it doesn't fit the story or anything. I think it's considered to be a scribal error -- like maybe some scribe saw a similar name and 'corrected' it, since the story was about a character called Beowulf.
