My first Monarch of the season (on their return migration to Mexico) -- but it is AUGUST! This is not Fall yet! My asters are not blooming in August, so there's not a lot of nectar yet!
Don't get me wrong -- I'm loving the cool highs of 84F (28.89C) in August, but so very odd to see a Monarch now.
Great picture! To me, Monarchs feel like a more distinguished version of the Painted Lady butterflies. What could this Monarch be feeding on at this time of year?
There are zinnias and a butterfly bush blooming in the yard for nectar. The milkweed is not blooming, but available for them to lay eggs. And who know what neighbors have in their yards.
