Last night, a slight haze of smoke settled in the neighborhood a few times. Based on the chemical-ness of the smoke, I presume this smell was not from fire, but from the teargas canisters used in the riots downtown last night.

I live several miles from downtown, so at first I was surprised that the smoke would travel that far. But as I thought about it, I remembered when the Great Dismal Swamp was burning, that I could smell that too, and the Great Dismal is several hours away.

The smoke was pretty sharp smelling, and my eyes were dry afterwards. I typically keep my windows open as much as the weather allows, and I was sitting inside when I first noticed this odd smoke smell wafting in the windows. I walked around the house and out onto the street and alley to investigate. Over the next few hours, the smell came and went outside but lingered inside. I had hoped open windows would clear the smell, but eventually I shut the windows and turned my AC on to flush the scent. The AC helped a lot, but a slight remnant of the smell lingered in the house pretty much all night until this morning when I re-opened the windows.
